Saturday, July 19th: Redentore Night in Venice

In July, it’s Redentore – the “famous famous” night in Venice

The date of Redentore is always marked in red on my calendar – not just because it’s a unique event, but also because the entire city comes to a halt. And for those of us who live and work here, it’s kind of important to know.

But on what’s known as the “famous famous” night, Venice doesn’t just stop – it dresses up in one of its most beautiful evening gowns, made not only of lights and fireworks, but also of emotions, memories, and that silent magic only those who live it from within can truly understand.

A vow from nearly 500 years ago

The story of Redentore is deeply human. In 1577, after two years of plague, Venice made a vow: if the city was spared, a church would be built in gratitude. And that’s how the Basilica del Redentore was born – a masterpiece of light and balance, designed by Palladio.

Even today, on the Saturday before the third Sunday of July, a floating bridge connects Giudecca to the Zattere, just a few steps from Suite735. Walking across it, surrounded by a crowd—whether silent or chatty—is a symbolic yet profound gesture.

Fireworks, water, boats, wonder

So, on Saturday, July 19th, Venice will be ready to give her very best. From the afternoon, you can already feel something special in the warm air: some decorate their boats, some pop the first bottle of prosecco, others prepare homemade dishes to bring down to the water.

The St. Mark’s Basin becomes a stage on the water: boats turn into floating lounges, laughter echoes across the lagoon, and toasts are made over and over again. Then night falls: the lights dim, eyes turn to the sky, and the firework show begins, leaving Venetians, tourists—and me—speechless. Even though I’ve seen it a dozen times, it’s always like the first. It’s a moment that’s hard to explain. The best I can say is this: it feels like the city whispers, “Look what I can be,” and it’s impossible not to fall in love all over again.

A feast at the table, too

Redentore is also a celebration of food: cicchetti, sarde in saor, chilled seafood pasta, glasses of icy white wine, watermelon sliced on the spot, gelato, and much more.

Each family or group of friends has its own dishes, each boat its own way to celebrate. I love seeing Venice like this: real, pure, full of simple stories that brim with life.

An invitation to live it

If you happen to be in Venice during Redentore weekend, don’t watch it from afar. Live it. Walk, get lost, hop on a boat if you can, stop wherever you smell something delicious or hear music calling you.

As always, I’ll be here to welcome you at Suite735. We’re just a few steps from the Zattere, and if you want some tips on where to watch the fireworks, where to eat something special, or where to simply be amazed… just ask.
Because ever since I chose to live in Venice, Redentore has meant more than just one night – it’s the way this city reminds me just how truly unique it is.
